I spent my early adulthood in Birmingham, my family lives in a small town 30 miles to the east and I went to the Magic City to attend Samford University and The Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing. This will be a happy homecoming for me.

Also, the work sold at this show will benefit a very worthwhile organization, Triumph Services whose mission is to serve the historically under-served group of adults with mild developmental disabilities. Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of funding short falls, of the 30,000 individuals who are struggling with Autism in the state of Alabama, 40 percent of them do not qualify for government run services. Brooke Stephens, founder and director of Triumph Services will also be on hand to answer your questions and share information about this valuable organization.

I ask that you come out purchase art and help me support the amazing work done by Triumph Services. Due to high demand, I have added a class in Asheville. The dates are Aug 28, 29, 30, if you have any interest in learning encaustic techniques, I’d love to have you in the class. This three-day intensive workshop combines beginning and intermediate techniques for a complete and balanced introduction to encaustic painting. Students will learn about the history of encaustic painting, supports, grounds and panel preparation, how to layer and collage with wax to create your very own encaustic paintings. Each student will have the opportunity to experiment and create 5 – 10 finished paintings. I was moved to see several pieces from my beloved teacher, Thomasine Bradford; you are missed, dear Thomasine.

MOCA ga features 600 works of contemporary art by more than 200 Georgia artists, the collection rotates and it’s a great way to celebrate Georgia artists.

Pryor Fine Art-has added the work of three fine artists, John Folsom, Kim Froshin and Felice Sharp.

Left: John Folsom Right: Kim Froshin

Please keep up with me on Facebook I'm posting updates, etc.

Interview with Stephanie Walker of Walker Contemporary Boston MA

Walker Contemporary
450 Harrison St, Boston, MA

Stephanie thought she would change the world by working with youths at risk. Fresh from college, she had agreed to take a job in rural TN. Lucky for us art world types she realized the possible difficulties of dealing with large, hormonal eighteen year old boys.

This is one “can do” woman; when the local gallery guide set limitations on gallery listings, Walker came up with The Art Map Boston, a more complete and user friendly guide to Boston’s galleries.

While Walker’s first inspiration is working with at risk youth; she has always been intrigued by art, “I talked about art this and art that all the time.” Too timid to pursue an opening in a local gallery a friend of Walker’s quietly submitted her resume.

Much to her surprise Walker was invited to interview. While skeptical of her “no Rolodex, no pedigree” status, Walker’s sheer exuberance wowed the gallery owners and she landed the job.

This first gallery position proved to be fertile training ground and Walker moved on to work with Chase, a position she held for about ten years. Ironically, Chase has moved into the very building that houses Walker Contemporary.

For a short time, Walker ended up in Los Angeles where she decided to open her own business. “I got up every day and went into the 2nd bedroom of our house whose door bore the sign, ‘WC’.” She began to explore and discover the new work from artists previously unknown to her.

Walker is drawn to work that is expertly rendered, complex, repetitious and generally speaks to an environmental component. Frequently the work is bittersweet, ironic and process oriented. Moved by artists who push their materials, Walker best relates to artists who seek to bend their medium as far as possible.

“I admire an artist who will continue on even if the idea is not yet working out. The artist who will face nothing to create something.” When one of her artists is stuck and dissatisfied she encourages by suggesting they, “keep at it, even if the result is horrid, just have the guts to keep showing up.”

For community involvement and local outreach, Walker suggests ICA, The Institute of Contemporary Art, as making contemporary art accessible and intellectually challenging. I couldn’t agree more, The ICA is one of Boston’s jewels with its amazing view of Boston Harbor, cafe, and easy parking, it is a delightful destination.

When asked how she thought galleries were faring in Boston, Walker responded, “While there have been come closing most were not closed for economic reason, it’s a situation of the time has come. A few gallery owners were ready to retire and others were ready for a change of focus. This freed several Boston art dealers to push away their boundaries and try a fresh, new approach to their business partnerships and to present new artists.

Clay Scot Artworks
I’ll be showing this September at Clay Scot Artworks, the show will open on
September 3, 2010 in Birmingham AL. Please accept my invitation to stop by and see me and /or the show as I will be at the opening.

Some of you might not know that I actually have Alabama roots, my family lives near Birmingham and I attended the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University. Ok, I actually graduated from the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing and I continue to faint at the sight of blood. Clearly, art is my calling.

A portion of my sales will benefit the very hard working organization, Triumph Services. I know first hand how valuable their work is and I want to support their good works. We would welcome your support as well.

In the mean time, give a shout to Darrell and get of preview of what I'll be showing in September.

Mary’s Teaching Schedule

July 17, 18 , 19 Asheville NC this class is full
Aug 2,3,4 Charleston SC, Redux Studios
Dec 9,10,11 Fairhope AL, Eastern Shore Art Center

Grace
My recent show in Atlanta at Kai Lin Art, GRACE, received a wonderful review:
Grace Review . It was a fantasticshow and I'm so honored to have shown with two other fine women, Anne Davnes-Elser and Sun Hong.

Lobbying in Raleigh, NC
While I’ve only been in Asheville for two years, I’ve certainly learned a whole bunch about creative economy. I am so happy to be in a state that understands the importance of its creative workers. You might be surprised, I was, to know that the creative industries in North Carolina contribute $41,000,000,000 to the state economy (yes, that’s billion with a B) and we are responsible for almost 300,000 jobs.

Now, let me clear here, $41 billion dollars to the NC economy, seems we are due a bailout similar to the one received by Ford and Goldman Sachs. Artists pay mortgages, employ many other workers and pay taxes on the income generated by art sales. We are mighty economic engines and hardworking small business folk.

Here's a link to a study done by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources on creative economy. Now you know just how important art is to you and to your community.

MerleFest 2010

MerleFest Blog

My first MerleFest 2010–one spectacular musical extravaganza: folk, roots, Americana, bluegrass, country, something for everyone. Take a pair of classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar and the occasional funky accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you've got the ingredients for a show you won't soon forget. Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind; to get people on their feet and dancing. Their repertoire ranges from traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes, and then crosses back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

Scythian’s perfomance in the Dance Tent resulted in a RAVE! I can’t tell you how much fun it was to hear various folk from various groups play and sing together. It was

Larkin Poe
Larkin Poe stared as the The Lovell Sisters, consisting of three sisters and three additional players. Fans of the sister band may be sad to see them go, it’s not as sad as it may seem at first. The oldest sister, Jessica, is attending college now and was recently engaged, leaving little time for traveling with the band. The two younger sisters however, Megan and Rebecca, will continue to perform as Larkin Poe.

Elvis Costello is such a fan he said, "These sisters stole the show, last year."

Grace

Grace Lush/Ethereal/Color
Opens March 19 at Kai Lin Art
800 Peachtree St, Atlanta GA

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Here’s what she had to say:

Farmer: “Anna, having recently made the move myself, I’m curious about how you decided to settle in Asheville?”

Parker-Barnett: “Our family made a decision to move to Asheville because it has a year round population, physical beauty and great schools. I was traveling to Los Cabos, Mexico from Hickory and felt we needed to settle into one place as our children neared high school age.”

Farmer: What? Los Cabos?
Parker-Barnett: “Yes, I had a furniture, rug, lamp, gallery and design business, The Baja Design Center, that served the Canadian and American market in that area. The Art gallery became the Parker Collection which I sold in 2004.”

“When we made the move to Asheville I decided to focus solely on fine art. In Asheville I have found the warmth, acceptance and support to flourish.” Parker-Barnett goes on to say, “Ashevillians embrace newcomers and have great regard for their regional artists.”

Of her early influences, Parker-Barnett reflects, “My childhood is steeped in the memories of my mother’s design flair; she was young and experimental. Life was like being inside a Steve St. Claire painting; she was very daring with her design sense."

Our discussion touched on some of economic considerations in the local art world we specifically talked about the ECONOMIC IMPACT of the PROFESSIONAL CRAFT INDUSTRY in WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA study. This study has revealed our craft industry as a significant economic engine with an estimated $207,000,000 annual economic impact. “While the economic impact of fine art has not been specifically studied we can surmise that the fine art impact, with so many more outlets, easily surpasses this $207 million figure.” Parker-Barnett further asserts, “So far none of the Asheville galleries have closed during the recent economic downturn.”

When asked what she sees in our arts future, Parker-Barnett passionately reveals her desire to see a visual arts center in Asheville. “Asheville has a sophisticated population who will support a visual arts center downtown. Plus, we have a significant pool of artists right here in WNC. Our artists are highly innovative and creative. The artists strive to be accessible--take the River Arts District and the Downtown Art Walk as examples. A visual arts center would bring more of the artists to downtown, they would then draw more visitors to the Asheville area.”

“We could start by integrating a city guide of galleries that highlights the three main gallery districts, Historic Downtown Asheville, River Arts District and Biltmore Village.”

Farmer: “Is Asheville on the right track?”
Parker-Barnett: “Asheville is moving along with good direction. We offer great variety to art lovers.”

Farmer: “What are your thoughts on running a successful gallery?”
Parker-Barnett: “It is sheer magic when you witness someone’s connection with a painting turn into a need. This keeps me motivated.”

Farmer: “What qualities do you admire or look for in an artist?”
Parker-Barnett: “Confidence without ego, comfort with what they say, professionalism and flexibility--being open to suggestion.”

Farmer: “I’ve been wondering, why the name Minerva?’
Parker-Barnett: “I wanted the gallery to stand on its own, I didn’t want it to be all about me and Minerva is the goddess of wisdom and the arts.”

Free Planet Radio, Jan 30, 2010
"World Music Supergroup" in concert at the Arts Center. The point is a wonderful meal at Cafe Azalea on Tunnel Road. Here's what I had: Chipotle turkey meatloaf- portabella gravy and olive oil sweet potatoes for $9.99. It was just delicious. The service was delightful, our waiter was knowledgeable and helped my dairy and gluten intolerant lunchmate with her selection. We left with big smiles.

Keep this in mind for lovely fall dining, Cafe Azalea has a nice patio for dining. They also feature local artists. The show changes every two months with an opening recpetion of their yummy apps and local brews. Then, mid-May, the call came-- it was time for the event!

“Oh no”, I thought, “What will I do?” I’m pretty sure Audrey felt some apprehension as well. I know she was uneasy by my "do not worry we will make this happen attitude", you know, “these are creative people–they will get it”.
The evening was truly fun, I enjoyed the creative energy brought in by each and every participant, Audrey deserves special thanks for her great organizational abilities, our friends at Living Design for the fantastic space, and ASID members for their great enthusiasm.

And to punctuate my point, here’s an email from a happy participant:

Thanks for doing it. I had a terrible day at work that day and the last thing I wanted to do was be around people & "try to paint". But I am so glad I went. I hadn't painted since college and it was such a refreshing outlet for my frustrations that day. Thank you so much for giving us all a reason to be creative. And thanks to Audrey for getting us all together and all the hard work you put into making it happen. It paid off!

Plus, we were noted in the local newsletter:

Divine Living: A Great Experience
Artist Mary Farmer & Designers Painted It Up in Showroom

A "Sips and Strokes" event, hosted by the beautiful furniture showroom, Divine Living, in the Biltmore Square Mall, was the scene recently of a group of interior designers experimenting with brush and palette. Under the supervision of the highly accomplished artist, Mary Farmer, designers discovered another side of themselves in the field of art beyond specifying art for clients' interiors.

While playfully slapping paint on their canvases, a few designers announced that producing extraordinary art, compared to Ms. Farmer's exquisite canvases on hand, was a little more of a challenge than they previously imagined. A new level of appreciation of the talent and skills it takes to produce fine art was the outcome.

This ASID June 25th event, arranged by the new ASID Northwest Design Community co-chairs--- Audrey Helms Walter, Allied ASID, and Talli Allen-Roberts, ASID, included a tour of Divine Living's inspiring line of furniture and accessories. A visit to Divine Living's extensive fabric samples department was well worth the trip, all by itself.

Phyllis Roberts, their gracious host at Divine Living, stated that she welcomed all interior designers and decorators use of the fabric samples department and the furniture showroom to assist their respective clients. It was a lot of fun and I caught up with so many of my Atlanta friends. My warmest and special thanks to everyone who came out.
.

Birmngham, Alabama Art Visit

The whole FaceBook connection thing finally has paid off! I met Karen Jacobs, artist and good soul on FB and we made a date to meet at the Birmingham Museum of Art. I have to report that I haven’t set foot in the Bham museum in many, many moons.

If you, like me, have not visited in while, it’s time to make a stop at the Birmingham Museum of Art—it has changed! The collection is pretty substantial with an interesting mix, admission is free, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I had a most interesting conversation with one of the docents while waiting for Karen (turns out she was already there and we were waiting at different entrances). Oh well, I digress…..

The Museum offers 6 collection support groups:
The Friends of American Art, The Asian Art Society, The Photography Guild, The Sankofa Society: Friends of African-American and African Art,The Collectors Circle for Contemporary Art, and The European Art Society. These groups foster growth and development for the museum and for collectors. Special events are scheduled through out the year for each support group, I urge you to check this out. What a great way to connect to your community and to learn more about art and its place in our society.

Birmingham Museum of Art is also looking into expanding; they are bursting at the seams and are in dire need of more space. There is talk of taking over Boutwell Auditorium and restoring its original façade. This would be a great addition to Birmingham’s cultural scene. Personally, I’m of the opinion that Birmingham has great potential in post recession days ahead. Tuck this little plum away.

Here’s a nice gallery outing:
Clay Scot Artworks, Loretta Goodwin Gallery, Matt Jones Gallery, Bare Hands Gallery, Maralyn Wilson, Naked Art, Littlehouse and Monty Stabler.

Birmingham galleries host a myriad of artists, styles, and inventory. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the diversity.

I was unable to visit Bare Hands and Clay Scott as they were both closed on Tues. I did receive a phone call from Phillip Powell of Clay Scot offering to open the gallery for me, I’m so sorry I missed it. Over 150 artists submitted work for consideration, not surprising for a region known to foster its artists.

The work of Ian Brownlee, Ben Johnson, Marie Knight, Genie Maples, Libby & Jim Mijanovich, Sylvie Rosenthal, Gabriel Shaffer, E. Ryan Simmons, and Megan Van Deusen is featured in a show at the Asheville Area Arts Council through May 29, 2009.

A short bio of each artist is available in May 2009, “The ARTS Issue”, of WNC Magazine. The powers that be at WNC magazine are delighted with the outcome and huge number of web hits on this issue. Keep it up we need your support! Please let everyone know that art is important to you and to your community. We love Asheville because of the many cultural offerings, if they go away so will the great quality of life we so enjoy here.

Three Day Encaustic Class
I’ve just finished teaching a 3 Day class here in Asheville; Fleta Monaghan hosted me and my hot plates and my heat guns in her River’s Edge Studios this past week end.

We had so much fun! Everyone just jumped in with both, uh, hands and made some art. This class starts from the very beginning and ends with intermediate encaustic techniques. All students left with finished pieces, many with the determination to continue on.

I’ll teach this class again in September, stay tuned for dates, etc.

My Work
I have been very busy with my own work; it’s been a most productive time for me. I’m very pleased to have been invited to show in two regional galleries, The Design Gallery in Burnsville and the new Revolving Arts Gallery in Hendersonville.

If you have not visited The Design Gallery, 7 S Main St, Burnsville, NC, I urge to check it out. Firstly, it’s a delightful day trip from Asheville and secondly, you are going to be astounded by the quality work in Wendy Reid’s gallery.

Artists are drawn to this region for many reasons: natural beauty, spirituality, cultural happenings, m usic, the long history of art making, etc. The quality of work available will astonish. Wendy is personally acquainted with of all her artists. She will quickly share that knowledge to give you a firm sense of what is happening with any particular piece of art; you will make an informed choice.

Wendy and I were featured in the May issue of WNC Woman. Check it out, if you’d like a copy just let me know.

Down in Hendersonville, Julie Spalla and David Lookingbill have launched The Revolving Arts Gallery. I love how artist's minds work and how we look at the world. It was my great pleasure to me John Folsom.

John Folsom
Folsom has just received confirmation of a show at the Gibbes Museum in Charleston; well deserved I might add.

John's photo based work lends a dreamy quality to the bucolic settings he photographs; his work is visually arresting and expertly crafted. Folsom reminds us why our landscape is important. This is especially significant to me as I've just seen some of George Masa's, the Ansel Adams of Appalachia, remaining photos of the Blue Ridge (c. 1922-1933). Much of this landscape has been preserved in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Where it could have gone so terribly wrong, this beauty has been preserved.

We depend upon George Masa and John Folsom to help us remember what was.

Asheville
Asheville has more galleries than Charlotte, hmm. They do not hide behind computer screens and desks, they get up and greet you when you visit Gallery Minerva. Anna and Heidi speak with great authority about each artist in their gallery, I'm not talking art-speak either. It is so refreshing. Thank you both.

I'm happy to report the expansion of Gallery Minerva into a second space on Biltmore Ave. Anna is a great resource for starting or expanding your collection. If you are a first time art buyer and feel a bit intimidated, ask Anna, she will deftly guide you through the art purchase process. I urge you to support this downtown expansion and spend time and money in Asheville. This is a courageous move for Gallery Minerva and I applaud their grit and hope for their continued success.

Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts
Another Asheville treasure is Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts. The show runs through March 6. Good food, great music and best of all excellent clay work. The show is beautifully curated by the resident artists. They are all versed in the complexities of ceramic art and willing to share this information with you.

Odyssey is one of those unique places that fosters artistic achievement; you'll find studio space with all the necessary equipment, classes, seminars, lectures and workshops.

Here I'll share the work of two Odyssey artists, Jillian Wolf and Kat McIver. In fact it was kind of “Seattle” like--moody, grey, foggy and breezy.

I began my gallery crawl and found some contemporary art treasures here: RLS, Rebekah Jacobs, Redux Contemporary Art Center, Eva Carter Gallery, City Gallery, and Cone 10 Studios.

Redux Contemporary Art Center
Dalek, Broke Beaten and Buried
Jan 23-Mar 7, 2009

Here at Redux Contemporary, James Marshall, aka Dalek, has moved away from his well-known individualized works on canvas. This new work explodes within the galleries of Redux. The main portion of the exhibition was created on-site, one and a half weeks before the opening. A team of 8 people came together under the direction of Dalek to install this exciting work.
There are great photographs from the exhibition on the Redux website
and Dalek's website that you should check out if you haven't already.

The galleries crackle with visual excitement. I heard Charleston turned out 1,000 people, at the opening, to see this eye grabbing installation. You'll experience geometry and color theory seamlessly combined; the artist’s hand is never visible.

RLS

Robert and Megan Lange are the most delightful, charming and knowledgeable art couple. Robert’s photorealism is featured in the gallery and he paints on site. Megan’s thoughtful landscapes are a subtle contrast to Robert's work. Figures and face are obscured, juicy items are collaged, and firm, confident strokes add layer upon layer of content. Hussey's figures are not shy; there’s humor and thoughtfulness going on here, take a serious look at this work.

Rebekah Jacobs Gallery is the only gallery in Charleston to run a contemporary program, photography program, a folk art program and an African-American program. You can see the Bay Area/Olivera influence in these constructions, where layers are added and layers are removed; snippets of each bring the surface to life. These figures are moody, strong, vague and present. The tension is palpable, we’re not sure what has transpired. Says Farmer, "Working in wax, encaustic painting, is a very physical endeavor. You'll find heat guns, hot plates, large wooden panels, and gas torches in my studio. This physicality is very appealing to me as I layer and scrape, gouge and fill, heat and distress each work. When paired with my own visual vocabulary, I find myself deeply involved in the process; it is the perfect combination of process, abstraction, color, movement and composition."

Paintings rendered in encaustic have given collectors a new medium to contemplate and has attracted its very own following. The work is lush, luminous and presents great depth.

A reception for Asheville artist Mary Farmer will be held in the Boardroom Gallery on Friday, January 9, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Asheville Area Arts Council,11 Biltmore Avenue. “Changing Coasts”, the exhibit remains on display through Feb 28.

Movie Suggestions
See these: Slumdog Millionaire, MILK, and Rachel Getting Married

Beyond the Surface: Life Works in Painting and Assemblage

Lewis Buck’s Beyond the Surface: Life Works in Painting and Assemblage at the Fine Art Museum, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee through Dec. 15.

To finally see the work of an unsung hero featured in his own retrospective is such a rich experience. You might recall my mention of Frank Lobdell and his retrospective in a previous post, well, right here in Western North Carolina, I find Lewis Buck being similarly celebrated for his dedication to art making.

“Little Known Bird of the Inner Aisle,” assemblage, Lewis Buck, 1978.

Buck has been painting, without pause, since the 1940s. Viewing this deeply thoughtful selection of Buck’s work gave me clear insight into recent art history, Buck’s sharply intelligent mind, and his curious soul.

Buck is a master of assemblage or the “glued and screwed” approach to painting. He uses anything at hand, old Adirondack chairs, roofing shingles, aprons, lace trim, burlap, saw blades, wood pieces, netting, etc. Nothing escapes his sharp eyes. I would suggest that Buck has taken inspiration from Picasso, Braque, Klee, Burri, Diebenkorn and Kenzo. Make no mistake, these are not homages to aforementioned artists; Buck’s work carries his own sophisticated vision.

Many artists find it difficult to title work, I hear it all the time. In fact, many times, I’ve done it too; artists have long and laborious discussion over a work’s title. Not so with Buck, this man loves word play. Could it be the echoes of that English Lit degree? I would love to hear him discuss his title choices.

Buck, now 83, and his wife, Porge, currently reside in Black Mountain (what is it about Black Mountain?). They moved to Asheville in 1983 and immediately began to shake things up in their Montford home. Since galleries were hard to find, they opened one, --in their own home. This gallery provided a place to showcase their work and the work of other local artists. The Buck’s worked for many years as fomenters of change; their neighborhood’s growing pains could find no relief.

See this show: Fall hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The museum is closed during holidays included on WCU’s academic calendar. I wasn’t’ sure about blogging and art reporting; in fact, I was looking for an excuse to discontinue and now I find I am so very engaged by the work I’ve seen and the people I’ve met, it just feels right to pass this information along.

So, dear reader, I will dash here and there and not limit my reporting to Asheville Art Happenings. I’m sure as time goes on this blog will become more WNC-centric. Hey, just come along and let’s see what happens.

Frank Lobdell, Living Legends of the Bay Area
Marin MOCA, Novato CA

Frank has long been a hero of mine and I cannot begin to explain how thrilled I am that the home of my former studio, the complex that houses the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, is hosting a show of his work from 1980-2008.

Frank Lobdell has been painting for over half a century and still goes to his studio everyday. He is the consummate artist, respected by peers and admired by students and collectors. He continues to draw and draw and draw until the composition comes together and meets his approval.

Over the years, his imagery has become sparse and color has taken on the primary role. Lobdell has developed his own language and you see him use it to communicate his deeply held beliefs and feelings. His work imparts joy and is rich in the iconography invented by Frank Lobdell.

Gabriel Shaffer, If you Want Blood
The Satellite Gallery, Asheville NC

Imagine this—I attend my first opening in Asheville and find I can’t stop looking at the work and when I did tear my eyes away from this complex, deeply layered, engaging work, everyone else in the gallery seemed equally enthralled. It’s been a long, long time since I noticed people actually looking at artwork. It was an opening I intend to savor.

Shaffer twists biblical themes, unhinges a cityscape and sets all animals in the kingdom free. We are not always sure what lies beyond our first glance. Each time you look at a Shaffer work you will discover something new, the imagery is never fully apparent from your first look. You must consciously use your eyes and your brain to explore this work.

Of these paintings and constructions, says Gabriel, “I incorporate a lot of paperwork salvaged from various sources, such as abandoned buildings, hospitals, factories, houses, dumpsters, flea markets and any other means I might come upon them. I am fascinated by where I find these materials and I feel it gives them an extra power when I reincarnate them through the paintings.” I must add that his craft is finely honed; these works are exquisitely rendered.

Recently, Gabriel has joined the fine Atlanta Gallery, Mason Murer; you can expect a show early next year.

Pop on over to The Satellite and have a good, long look at this intriguing, mind stretching work.

Michael Hofman
Hofman Studios, Asheville NC

My first art purchase here in Asheville was spurred by a visit to Michael Hofman’s lovely studio. His hand-built porcelains are impossible to resist; the glazes are jewel like and stunning. Hofman’s signature use of antique lace sets apart this work and gives it a timeless appeal.

So, if you happen upon some fantastic lace, send it Michael’s way as he is always looking for that certain piece.

Lynn Boggess, New Paintings
The Haen Gallery, Asheville NC

I guess Boggess doesn’t even have time to name his shows as the work simply flies off the walls. I’m not kidding, the show was mostly sold one hour into the opening. A great testament to the following this great painter has developed here in art-smart Asheville.

If you love oil paint, go see this show. It’s rich, it’s luscious, it’s dreamy, it's masterful, it’s all the things you expect in a good painting. I am curious to know how long it takes them to dry as Boggess loads the paint on with a cement trowel. –really!

A look at this plein aire work feels like a refreshing walk in the woods where you can feel the cool stream and smell the evergreens. He has taken you there just as surely as he was there.

Mary Farmer, Mark Pomilio, and Donovan Widmer,
Life and the Machine
Yavapai College Art Gallery, Prescott AZ

If you find yourself near Prescott, AZ please stop in and see my show.
